‘I was born and raised in an apartment block in the capital hanoi. with over 20 years experiences of living in it, I found it does not take much of urban life but rather is a complex area ‘village’ stacked on top of each other. it is self-improvement of living space, farming, growing vegetables and upgrade living conditions in the prevailing promiscuous. there are people share everything and not much about privacy, confidentiality. I question myself: ‘do angels could live together in a paradise?’

The original “March of Progress” image is one of the best known scientific illustrations in the world and Maentis.com is remixing it, 2012-style, 99 times over. The 99 Steps of Progress, coming out of the Paris based artist collective Maentis, is a release of 99 re-imagined versions over the course of the next 99 days.

The designs make a statement on our journey as a society from neanderthal (in the original image) to our present forms (whatever they may be). The designs poke fun at the jarring shifts in lifestyle we are seeing today as the landscape of pop culture continually evolves. Although not always a positive step forward, (wittingly implied in the name, 99 Steps of “Progress”) the designs make a case for reflection on our own progress as we go through life. The stylized silhouette images provide a treat for the eyes as well!

Afgelopen weekend opende in een van mijn favoriete Nederlandse musea, de Pont in Tilburg, de expositie van de Duitse kunstenares Katharina Grosse. Ze is vooral bekend door haar installaties waarin de schilderkunst, letterlijk en figuurlijk, een nieuwe dimensie krijgt. In De Pont maakte zonder andere 68 grote en ter plekke beschilderde ballonnen, waarvan sommige een doorsnede hebben van wel vier meter!

Je hebt nog tot 9 juni om naar Tilburg af te reizen. Op de Facebook pagina van De Pont staan trouwens wat leuke making of foto’s.

Steel Pond Studios | Portland, Oregon-based steel sculptor Robert Jefferson Travis Pond - Half of what I do is collecting materials. For me, the question is never where to start; it is always when to stop. It is a constant look beyond the object, beyond the form, to what is next. Each circumstance, or in this case, each piece, spontaneously connects to the next. This seemingly random assortment of metal dictates its future in a very fast and spontaneous manner. The sculpture decides for itself what it will look like and when it is complete.

Last year, I saw a time-lapse video of Travis Pond making a large-scale dragon. (A bonus: The video soundtrack’s a live Mile Davis performance.) Fun to watch, even if you look at only a little bit of it. Video’s here.

Chan Hwee Chong | These one line illustrations of well know art pieces created by Chan Hwee Chong for Faber Castell’s pen are amazing. The pieces created in this series are Vermee’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Van Gogh’s Self Portrait and Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. Chan Hwee Chong is an art director and illustrator originally from Singapore, currently based in Hamburg, Germany. He holds a diploma in visual communication from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
